7 endocrine glands
hypothalamus
pituitary gland
thyroid
adrenal glands
pancreas
ovaries
testes
what is the endocrine system?
a collection of ductless glands that secrete hormones directly into the blood stream
three functions of the endocrine system
- regulate body activities e.g. growth
2.control of reproductive process
3.homeostasis
endocrine disorders
diabetes mellitus
hyperthyroidism
diabetes insipidus
hypothalamus function
links nervous and endocrine system together by the way of the pituitary gland.
it secretes releasing hormones and inhibiting hormones that stimulate or inhibit production of hormones in anterior pituitary.
pituitary gland
produces several hormones to maintain body production.
FSH stimulates the production of maturing follicles in the ovaries
LH causes ovulation
thyroid gland
TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine
pancreas
creates insulin that allows your body to use glucose for energy
adrenal glands
ACTH stimulates the release of cortisol from the adrenalin glands - fight or flight energy
ovaries
produces oestrogen and progesterone in the ovaries for females.
plays important role in female traits like breast development body shape and body hair
testes
to produce sperm and produce male sex hormones
synthesises testosterone for male sex hormone and it participates with the hypothalamus-pituitary unit in regulating reproductive function
