- filtrate waste products and toxins from blood
- formation of urine
- regulation of water and salt balance in the body
- regulation of blood pressure and blood volume
- maintenance of the normal PH balance in the blood
ureter function and size
-they both carry urine from the kidneys in the bladder until it is expelled through the urethra
-females is 4cm long
-males is 18-20cm long
how does urination occur?
to urinate, the urethral sphincter muscle relaxes and muscular contractions occur in the bladder wall, forcing the urine out through the urethra
urinary tract infections symptoms
-pain or burning sensation when urinating
-frequent urination
-lower abdominal pain
-cloudy or dark, strong smelling urine
treatment for urinary tract infections
- antibiotics
-good personal hygiene - drinking cranberry juice
acute renal failure symptoms
- fatigue
- swelling
- kidney pain
- hand tremor
- decreased appetite
- changes in urination habits

-diuretic drugs
- intravenous fluids
-electrolytes
- possible short term dialysis
chronic renal failure symptoms
- tiredness

- blood in the urine
- confusion developing as the disease progresses
