Skeletal System Flashcards
How many bones are in the skeletal system?
206 bones
What are considered “long” bones?
the femur, radius and humerus
What are considered “short” bones?
Carpals and Tarsals
What are considered “flat” bones?
Ribs, Scapula, Skull, and Sternum
What are considered “irregular” bones?
Vertebrae, Sacrum, Mandible
Diaphysis
The shaft of a long bone, located between the epiphyses
Epiphysis
Spongy bone tissue, located at either end of a long bone
How many bones does the Axial Skeleton consist of?
80 bones
How many bones does the Skull have?
8 - cranial
14 - facial
6 - auditory ossicles
How many bones does the the Thoracic cage have?
25 bones
How many bones does the Appendicular Skeleton have?
126 bones
- 60 > upper extremity
- 60 > lower extremity
- 2 > pelvic girdle
- 4 > pectoral girdle
Vertebral/Spinal Column
The portion of the skeleton consists of the vertebrae and intervertebral disks.
The 4 curvatures of the spine
Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, and Sacral
Atlas
The 1st cervical vertebra.
Articulates with the occipital bone and the axis
Axis
The 2nd cervical vertebra, which the atlas bone articulates.
This allows the head to be rotated, extended, and flexed.
Coccyx
The last bone at the base of the vertebral column
AKA the tailbone, attaches to the end of the sacrum.
Sternum
The bone that forms the anterior portion of the thoracic cage
True Ribs
7 pairs of ribs, attached to the sternum directly by their individual costal cartilages
False Ribs
Ribs in pairs 8 through 10, attached to the sternum indirectly
Floating Ribs
Ribs in pairs 11 and 12, which are not attached to the sternum
Pectoral Girdle
Consists of 2 clavicles (collarbones) and 2 scapulae (shoulder blades)
Clavicle
One of the pair of long bones that form the anterior part of the pectoral girdle. (Collarbone)
Scapula
One of the pair of large, flat, triangular bones that form the dorsal part of the pectoral girdle (shoulder blade)
Pelvic Girdle
The skeletal structure consisting of the ilium, the sacrum, and the coccyx.
Femur
The thigh bone and it is considered the largest and strongest bone in the skeleton.
