Muscular System Flashcards
Muscle
Connective tissue made up of contractile cells or fibers that produce movement
Skeletal Muscle
A muscle composed of cylindrical, multinucleated, and striated fibers that works together with the bones to enable movement
Smooth Muscle
A spindle-shaped, involuntary muscle that causes the contraction of blood vessels and viscera such as the intestines and the stomach.
Cardiac Muscle
A special striated muscle of the myocardium that pumps blood through the heart and blood vessels
Muscle Fiber
Any individual muscle cell
Myofibril
A slender, striated strand of contractile fiber within the skeletal and cardiac muscle cells
Epimysium
The fibrous sheath that surrounds muscle tissue
Endomysium
The fibrous sheath that surrounds each individual muscle cell
Fascia
A sheet of fibrous connective tissue that covers, separates or supports muscle
Tendon
A band of dense fibrous connective tissue, generally white in color, attaches muscle to bone.
Ligament
A band or sheet of fibrous tissue that connects two or more bones, cartilages or other structures
Sacroplasm
The cytoplasm of muscle fiber
Contraction
A shortening or tightening of a muscle.
Actin
A protein that forms the thin fibrils in muscle fibers
Myosin
A skeletal and cardiac protein that interacts with actin to cause muscle contraction
