Female Reproductive System Flashcards
Follicle-stimulating Hormone (FSH)
The hormone produced by the anterior pituitary that stimulates the development of the ova in the ovaries.
External female genitalia
Mons pubis, Clitoris, Labia Minora, and Labia Majora
Internal female genitalia
Ovaries, Fallopian Tubes, Uterus, Cervix, and Vagina
Ovary
The female gonad, located in the pelvic cavity, in which the ova is formed
Oocyte
A female germ cell that arises from an oogonium
Ovum
A mature female gamete
Oogenesis
The process of cell division, growth, and maturation of the ova
Ovulation
The expulsion and release of a mature ovum from a follicle in the ovary as a result of cyclic ovarian and pituitary endocrine function.
Progesterone
A hormone that maintains the uterine endometrium in the richly vascular state necessary for implantation and pregnancy
Menstrual Cycle
The recurring 28 day cycle of change in the endometrium during which the decidual layer of the endometrium is shed, then regrows and proliferates
Perineum
External area between the vulva and the anus
Menarche
The first menstruation in females, which usually occurs between ages of 9-17
Fertilization
The union of a secondary oocyte and a sperm cell
Zygote
A cell produced when an oocyte and sperm fuse
Cleavage
Early successive division of the zygote into a ball of progressively smaller cells
Menopause
The cessation of the reproductive cycle, the menstrual cycle stops naturally with the decline of cyclic hormonal production between the ages 35 and 60
Fetus
The developing organism in the uterus
Gestation
The period of development of the fetus from the time of fertilization to birth. AKA pregnancy
Umbilical Cord
A cordlike structure containing one vein and two arteries that connects the fetus to the placenta
Ductus venosus
The blood vessel that connects the umbilical vein and the inferior vena cava in a fetus
Prenatal
Beginning with fertilization and ending at birth
Embryonic stage
The stage of development from conception until the eighth week of pregnancy
Fetal stage
Beginning at the end of the eighth week of development and lasting until birth
Foramen ovale
An opening in the interatrial septum of the fetal heart
