Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the two divisions in the human body between bones & muscles?
Axial Skeleton + Axial Muscles & Appendicular Skeleton + Appendicular Muscles
What is contained in the Axial System?
Skull, the vertebral column (spine), ribs & sternum
What is contained in the Appendicular System?
Bones of the Shoulders, Arms, Hands, Hips, Legs, & Feet
What are the smallest and largest things in your body?
Cells = smallest — Organ Systems = largest
What two things define an organ?
It has 2 or more tissues & is a part of a system.
How many organ systems are there?
11
How many bones are in a grown persons body?
206 Bones
How many bones does a baby have?
304, they merge as they grow
How many bones are in the axial system?
80
How many bones are in the appendicular system?
126
PARTS OF THE BONE : what is the Compact Bone?
The outer (hard) layer
PARTS OF THE BONE : What is the Spongy Bone?
The inside of the bone, where marrow is found
PARTS OF THE BONE : What are the two kinds of marrow & their functions?
Red Marrow - creates red & white blood cells / Yellow Marrow - creates fat (energy production)
PARTS OF THE BONE : What is an Osteocyte?
Living bone cells, they monitor & maintain the bone matrix
PARTS OF THE BONE : What is the Osteoblast’s function?
Creates bone cells
PARTS OF THE BONE : What is the Osteoclast’s function?
Destroys bone cells
PARTS OF THE BONE : What is Apoptosis?
The self-destruction of Osteoblasts & Osteoclasts by the body
What is the function: Support
The skeletal support of the muscles: like legs, the pelvis, & the spine in order to hold up the body.
What is the function: Protection
Bones the protect organs in our bodies: the skull protects the brain, vertebrae protects spinal column, rib cage
What is the function: Blood Cell Formation
Red Bone Marrow produces red/white blood cells
What is the function: Reservoir
The storing & releasing of phosphorus & calcium
What is the function: Movement
Attached muscles that pull on bones to move the body
