skeletal system 🩻 Flashcards
joints
synovial:
- location: hips, shoulders, elbows, knees
- freely movable, in a membrane that is filled with synovial fluid
cartilaginous:
- location: symphsis pubis, vertebrae, sternum, ribs
- slightly movement, move my occurs during to compression of pad of cartilage
fibrous:
- location: cranium, teeth of sockets
- not movement between the bones
FUNCTION OF THE SKELETON
Support: provides a rigid for the framework.
Protection: protects soft parts of the body (organs/tissue).
Movement: provides site of muscle attachment, act as levers.
FUNCTION OF THE BONES
Storage:
- fat is stored and released in a yellow bone marrow.
- minerals like calcium are stored and released (sodium, magnesium, potassium)
Blood cell formation:
- RBC, WBC and platelets are formed in red bone marrow of cranium, vertebrae, ribs , sternum, pelvis and clavicles.
CLASSIFED BONE
Short bone: carpals, tarsals Long bone: femur, clavicle, humerus Irregular bone: vertebrae Sesamoid: patella Flat bone: cranium frontal
LONG BONE:
Spongy bone, compact bone, medullary canal, periosteum, cartilage
AXIAL AND APPENDICULAR SKELETON:
Axial: cranium, ribs, sternum, vertebrae
Appendicular: clavicle, humerus, ulna, radius carpals, phalanges, femur, patella, tibia, fibular, tarsals
