endocrine system 🧬 Flashcards
ENDOCRINE GLANDS AND THEIR HORMONES
Thyroid gland: control of metabolism, it produces thyroxine
Pancreas: regulates blood glucose (sugar) levels, it produces insulin
Ovaries: secondary sex characterises, it produces oestrogen
Testes: stimulates production of sperm, it produces testosterone
Adrenal glands: stimulates ‘fight or flight’ response, it produces adrenalin
THE ROLE OF HORMONES
Hormones are chemical messages that are carried and circulated through the blood. it relates stimulated in various ways (negative feedback systems, blood levels). hormones regulate and control various body processes (and/or activity of certain cells or organs) though their target organs/tissues.
TARGET TISSUES/ORGANS
a tissue or organ upon which hormone exerts its action, it has specific receptors enabling hormones to ‘do their job’. Homeostasis is maintained.
