Skeletal System Flashcards
Give 3 examples of the functions of the skeletal system
Any 3 from Support, Movement, Protection of the vital organs, Storage of minerals
Name the 12 bones in the skeletal system
Humerus, Radius, Femur, Ulna, Sternum, Ribs, Tibia, Fibula, Cranium, Vertebrae, Pelvis, Clavicle
Name the 2 short bones
Carpals and tarsals
Name the 2 long bones
Humerus and femur
Name the 3 flat bones
Ribs, sternum, scapula
Name the irregular bone in the skeletal system
Vertebrae
Name the sesamoid bone
Patella
What is the term meant by ‘joint’
A joint is a place where two or more bones meet, and is classified according to the amount of movement there is.
Give 3 examples of a joint
Any 3 from: Pivot, Condyloid, Saddle, Gliding, Ball and Socket, Hinge
Name the pivot joint
Vertebrae
Example of a fixed joint
Skull and Pelvis
Give an example of an slightly moveable joint
Spine, synovial joints
Name the bone at the saddle joint
Thumb
Name the bone at the Condyloid joint
Wrist
Name the bone at the gliding joint
Clavicle
Name the 2 bones at the ball and socket joint
Shoulder and Hip
Name the 2 bones at the Hinge joint
Elbow and Knee
List the type of movements that can occur at the Hinge Joint
Flexion and Extension
Ball and Socket
Abduction, adduction, rotation and circumduction
Types of posture changes
Kyphosis, Lordosis, Scoliosis
What is the definition of a ligament
A Tissue which connect bone to bone and stabilises the joint.
What is the definition of synovial fluid
Synovial fluid is secreted into the joint capsule to provide lubrication and reduce friction
What is the definition of tendons
A Tissue which connects muscle to bone which allows movement to occur at a joint.
What is the definition of the joint component, Articulating Cartilage
This is present at the end of the bones and acts as a shock absorber and provides cushioning upon impact
What is the definition of the joint component synovial membrane
This secrets synovial fluid into the joint capsule
What is the function of the Hamstring
The hamstring muscles are responsible for your hip and knee movements in walking, squatting, bending your knees, and tilting your pelvis.
What is the function of the femur
Holding the weight of your body when you stand and move. Stabilizing you as you move. Connecting muscles, tendons and ligaments in your hips and knees to the rest of your body
What is the function of the tibia
standing, walking, running, jumping and supporting the body’s weight.
What is the function of the fibula
Its main function is to combine with the tibia and provide stability to the ankle joint
