Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What is the function of the veins
thin walls, contain valves to ensure blood flows in one direction o carry blood to the heart, carry deoxygenated blood, carry blood under low pressure.
What is the function of the Arteries
thick, muscular walls, carry blood away from the heart to the body, carry oxygenated blood, carry blood under high pressure.
What is the function of the capillaries
the smallest blood vessels, with very thin walls, assist with gaseous exchange at the lungs
What is the function of the artery
carry oxygen-rich blood from your heart to your body
What is the function of the ventricle
A chamber that pumps blood out of the heart and into the circulatory system
What is the cardiac cycle
Deoxygenated blood – from the body → vena cava → right atrium → right ventricle → pulmonary artery→ to the lungs → pick up oxygen and nutrients to become oxygenated
Oxygenated blood – from the lungs → pulmonary vein → left atrium → left ventricle → aorta → to the body → drop off oxygen and nutrients, pick up waste products and become deoxygenated.
What is the equation for maximum heart rate
Maximum heart rate (MHR) 220 – age = MHR
What is the equation for stroke volume
Cardiac output – CO = SV x HR
What is the ideal range of blood pressure
the ideal range - between 90/60mmhg and 120/80mmhg
What are the factors that effect blood pressure
activity levels o diet o age o stress.
