Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the pathway of air through a human body
Nose/Mouth —> Pharynx —> Larynx —> Trachea —> Lungs —> Bronchi —> Bronchioles and alveoli
What are the roles of the intercostal muscles
Internal intercostals assist with exhalation and moving the ribs and chest cavity back to their original position
What is meant by the term diffusion
net flow of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
What is meant by the term gaseous exchange
The movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and blood at the alveoli
What are the features of alveoli that assist gaseous exchange
Moist, very thin walls (one cell thick), provides large surface area for it to occur, short diffusion distance, they are surrounded by capillaires
What is meant by Tidal Volume
The amount of air that goes in and out of our lungs for example an average male intake is around 500ml
What is meant by Residual Volume
Air that is remaining after inhaling or exhaling
What is meant by the term vital capacity
Amount of capacity our lungs can hold
