Skeletal System Flashcards
Bone cells are living or non-living tissue?
Bone cells have living tissue made of cells, proteins, AND also have nonliving tissue, such as minerals and vitamins
What is the function of the skeletal system?
Shape and support, protect your internal organs, and help your muscles move.
What is the periosteum?
Tough membrane that covers the surface of the bone
What is compact bone?
Hard, strong layer of bone that provides strength.
What is spongy bone?
Has small, open spaces that makes bones lightweight
-Located at the end of long bones
What is bone marrow?
Cavities at the center of long bones have red & yellow bone marrow. Red bone marrow makes: blood cells.
What is a joint?
- any place where 2 bones come together
- immovable joints allow little or no movement of bones
- movable joints allows body to move
What are ligaments?
A short band of tough, flexible fibrous connective tissue which connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint. Serves to move bones.
What are tendons?
attached muscle to a bone
a flexible but inelastic cord of strong fibrous collagen tissue attaching a muscle to a bone. The largest Tendon in our body is the achilles.
What are immovable joints?
An immovable joint connects the ends of two bones that don’t move. The bones in our skull are immovable
What are movable joints?
Allows the body to move, you can move these joints yourself.
Ex: ball and socket (shoulder), hinge joint (knees), gliding joint (wrists)
What is cartilage?
Allows body to move, you can move ese joints yourself
Ex: ball and socket (shoulder), hinge joint (knees), gliding joint (wrists)
What is voluntary muscle?
Muscles that can be consciously controlled. Includes: skeletal muscle
Ex: legs, and arms
What is involuntary muscle?
Are the muscles that cannot be controlled by will or conscious
Includes: smooth & cardiac muscle
What is skeletal muscle?
Muscle that’s attached to bones (the skeleton system)
and are voluntary muscles under our conscious control
