Circulatory System Flashcards
How does the blood flow through the heart and lungs?
Blood flows from the right atrium to the right ventricle through pulmonary artery to the lungs and gets oxygenated and returns to the heart through the pulmonary veins and into the left atrium, left ventricle, then aorta to the body.
What is the atrium?
The two upper chambers of the heart (left and right). The right atrium takes in deoxygenated blood.
What are ventricles?
The lower chambers of the heart (left and right).
What is deoxygenated blood?
Blood that is low in oxygen; returns from the body to the heart (carried by the veins)
The deoxygenated blood goes down from the right atrium to the right ventricle. The heart then pumps it out of the right ventricle and into the pulmonary arteries to begin pulmonary circulation. The blood moves to the lungs, exchanges carbon dioxide for oxygen, and returns to the left atrium.
What is oxygenated blood?
Oxygenated blood is full of oxygen, and is the blood moving out from the heart into the body again (carried by the arteries.
What is coronary circulation?
Coronary circulation is the circulation of blood that supplies the heart muscle with blood
What is pulmonary circulation?
Pulmonary circulation is the movement of blood from the heart to the lungs for oxygenation, then back to the heart again.
What is systemic circulation?
Systemic circulation carries oxygenated blood from heart to the rest of the tissues if the body.
What are blood vessels?
Carries blood through the body; a general tubular structure that includes the veins, arteries, and capillaries
What are capillaries?
Microscopic blood vessels that connect arteries and veins.
What are arteries?
Major blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
What are veins?
Veins are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart and have one-way valves that keep blood flowing to the heart for example the right and left pulmonary veins.
What is hypertension?
Hypertension = High Blood Pressure
Hypertension can develop from Atherosclerosis (which is the blocking of arteries)
What is hemoglobin?
Hemoglobin is a chemical found in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to body cells and carries some carbon dioxide to the lungs from body cells.
What are white blood cells?
White blood cells help fight off bacteria and viruses in the body.
