Skeletal Physiology Flashcards
Endoskeleton
Internal Skeleton
Three things the skeleton does
- Supports the body & framework for movement.
- Protects our most vital organs
- Performs a variety of physiological role including storage of calcium and hematopoiesis.
Hematopoiesis
The production of all the cellular components within our blood. Namely red, white, and platelets.
Axial Skeleton
Made up of skull, ribcage, and spinal column. Forms the axis of our body.
Appendicular Skeleton
The bones of our four limb and pelvis. Our appendages.
Flat Bones
Made up of inner spongy (cancellous) bone and outer shell compact bone.
Purpose of flat bones
Protect our organs and are a place for hematopoiesis.
Long Bone Parts
Diaphysis, Epiphysis, Metaphysis
Location Diaphysis
Long middle part of long bone
Location Epiphysis
Ending part of long bone
Location/Purpose Metaphysis
Interconnects Diaphysis and Epiphysis. Contains the growth plate
Purpose of Long Bones
Act as a framework and place for Hematopoiesis
Types of bone marrow
Red bone marrow
Yellow bone marrow
Purpose of red bone marrow
Makes blood (Hematopoiesis)
Purpose of white bone marrow
A site for fat storage made up of adipocytes. Found in the Diaphysis of long bones.
