Skeletal Cartilage Flashcards
0
Q
What are the characteristics of Hyaline cartilage?
A
- provides support, flexibility, and resilience - is the most abundant skeletal cartilage - Is present in these cartilages: Articular, Costal Respiratory and Nasal
1
Q
What are the characteristics of Skeletal Cartilage?
A
- contains no blood vessels or nerves - surrounded by the perichondrium (dense irregular CT) that resists outward expansion - Three types: Hyaline, elastic, and fibrocartilage
2
Q
Define articular Hyaline cartilage
A
It covers the ends of long bones (which form a joint)
3
Q
Define Costal Hyaline cartilage
A
It connects the ribs to the sternum
4
Q
Define Respiratory Hyaline cartilage
A
It makes up larynx, reinforces air passages
5
Q
Define Nasal Hyaline cartilage
A
It supports the nose
6
Q
at are the characteristics of Elastic cartilage?
A
- similar to Hyaline cartilage, but contains large numbers of elastic fibers - found in the external ear and the epiglottis
7
Q
Define Fibrocartilage
A
- Highly compressed with great tensile strength - contains collagen fibers - found in the menisci of the knee, pubic symphysis, glenoid (shoulder) and acetabular (hip) labrum and in intervertebral discs
