Microscopic Structure of Bone: Compact Bone Flashcards
What is the structural unit of compact bone?
Osteon (aka: Haversian system)
What are the 3 main characteristics of the Osteon?
Lamellae
Haversian canal
Volkmann’s canals
Describe Lamellae?
weight-bearing, column-like matrix tubes composed mainly of collagen
What are the three kinds of lamellae?
Osteon lamellae
plus
Interstitial lamellae
plus
Circumferential lamellae
What is the Haversian canal (central canal)?
The central channel containing blood vessels and nerves
What are Volkmann’s canals?
Channels lying at right angles to the central canal, connecting blood and nerve supply of the periosteum to that of the Haversian canal
What are Lacunae?
small cavities in bone that contain osteocytes
What are osteocytes?
mature bone cells
What are canaliculi?
Hair-like canals that connect lacunae to each other and the central canal
