Skeletal (Bones, Tissue) Flashcards
Function (Support)
Structure + shape for body and anchor points for muscles.
Function (Protection)
Protects internal organs by covering or surrounding.
Function (Movement)
Bones act as levers for muscle action.
Function (Storage)
Store mineral ions, fats, and form and store blood.
What are the 5 types of bones?
Long, short, flat, irregular, sesamoid
Function (Attachment)
Skeletal muscles attach to bones by tendons.
Long bone
Long, Cylinder like, work as levers to give strength and structure
Examples of Long bones
Humerus, Radius, Femur, Tibia
Short bones
Cube like, equal width and height, support and stability; allow for limited movement.
Examples of Short bones
Wrist carpals, foot tarsals
Flat bone
Thin, flat, curved, support and protect organs, wide attachment points for large muscles.
Irregular bone
Couples, don’t fit in other categories, support and protection, allow for flexible movement
Examples of Flat bones
Cranium, ribs, sternum, pelvis
Examples of irregular bone
Vertebrae coccyx, ear bones
Sesamoid Bone
Small, round, like a sesame seed, protect tendons from large forces, joint movement.
