Skeletal And Muscular System - Biology Flashcards
How many bones are in the body?
Adult : 206
Children : a lot more
Cartilage
Cartilage acts like a shock absorber and allows limited movement as to stop bones rubbing of eachother.
Joint
A joint is where two bones meet.
Fused or Fixed joint
Does not allow bones to move, appear as if they have been stitched together.
Eg. Skull
Synovial joints
• Synovial joints allow the bones to move •
type one : ball and socket joints
type two : hinge joints
Ball and socket joints (synovial joint)
Ball and socket joints allow movement in several directions.
Eg. Hips and shoulders
Hinge joints (synovial joint)
Allows movement in one plane only.
Eg. Knee, elbow, jaw, knuckles
Ligaments
Ligaments are tough elastic fibres that hold the bones together.
Synovial fluids
Synovial fluid acts as a shock absorber, allowing bones to move and prevent friction.
Tendons
Tendons anchor muscles to bone. When the muscle contracts the joints and tendons bend and the bone moves.
Antagonistic pairs
The muscles can only contract (get shorter) and they can only pull bones. The biceps contract to pull up the lower arm, the triceps contract to pull down the lower arm.
What are the functions of the skeleton?
- To support the body
- To allow movement
- To protect organs
