Living Things - biology Flashcards
Movement
It is easy to see animals move when they run, swim or fly. Plants are harder to see move, as they only move when they are slowly growing
Respiration
Respiration is the release of energy from food. Living things break down food in their cells to supply themselves with energy
Sensitivity
Sensitivity means reponding to changes in the surroundings. Animals react very quickly to changes such as hearing a loud noise or seeing somthing dangerous.
Feeding
Nutrition is the way a living thing gets its food. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Plants make their own food using photosynthis.
Excretion
Excretion is the removel of toxic waste products and harmful chemical substances from the body. Animals excrete waste products such as salts, water, and carbon dioxide. Plants do not excrete much as they do not make much waste product.
Reproduction
Reproduction is the formation of new living things. Reproduction is needed to stop the dying out or extinction of that species.
Growth
Growth means that the organism gets bigger. If a living thing is made of only one cell, then growth means that cell gets bigger. For living things with many cells, growth invloves dividing to create new cells.
