Metals And Non Metals - Chemistry Flashcards
What is Corrosion?
Corrosion is an undesirable process where a metal changes to its oxide or some other compound by combining with oxygen from the air
What is Rusting?
Rusting is the corrosion of Fe (iron)
What happens when metals react with an acid?
When a metal reacts with an acid hydrogen gas is given off
What does zinc react with hydrochloric acid to form?
Zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid to form zinc chloride and hydrogen
What are Metals?
Metals are usually hard, dense, shiny and have high melting points
What is a Malleable metal?
Malleable means that they can be hammered into different shapes
What is a Ductile metal?
Ductile means they can be stretched into wire
What are Unreactive metals?
Unreactive metals can be found in nature, eg. Gold and Silver
What does Rusting need?
Rusting needs water and oxegen
How is corrosion prevented?
Corrosion is prevented using paint, grease, galvanising or chrome plating
What is Galvanising?
Galvanising is putting a layer of zinc on iron to prevent rusting
What is Bronze made of?
Bronze is made of copper and tin
What is Brass made of?
Brass is made of copper and zinc
What is Steel made of?
Steel is made of iron and carbon
What is Solder made of?
Solder is made of lead and tin
