Skelelal / soft tissue Conditions Flashcards
Osteoporosis: common sites of fracture
Thoracic and lumbar spine, femoral neck, proximal humerus, radius and tibia, pelvis
Osteomalacia
Decalcification of bones due to vitamin D deficiency
Symptoms: severe pain, fracture, weakness, deformity
Osteomyelitis
inflammation in the bone due to infection, usually staph aureus
Myofascial pain syndrome
Trigger points within a muscle - referral patterns are typical. Caused from sudden overload, overstitching or sustained muscle activities.
Intervention: dry needling, flexibility, desensitization
Tendonosis/ tendonopathy
No inflammation present
Intervention: flexibility, eccentric initially, manual therapy, thermal agents for pain
Bursitis
Inflammation of bursa secondary to overuse, trauma, gout or infection
Symptoms: pain with rest, limited PROM and AROM to pain not in capsular pattern
Myositis Ossificans
Painful abnormal calcification in the muscle belly
Etiology: usually from trauma, then hematoma and calcification
Most frequent locations: quadriceps, brachialis, biceps brachii
Surgery: indicated after trauma, and after maturation of 6-24 month or when lesions interfere with movement or nerves
Intervention: flexibility but not aggressive
Complex regional pain syndrome
Type I: tissue trauma, no nerve injury
Type II: clearly associated with nerve injury
Paget’s disease
Metabolic bone disease with abnormal osteoclast and osteoblast activity.
Etiology: unknown but thought to be linked to viral infection
Torticollis
Tightness of the SCM muscle - SB toward and rotation away from affected side
