Arthritic Conditions Flashcards
Degenerative Joint Disease
Degenerative process, multiple etiologies - mechanical changes, disease and/or joint trauma.
Characterized by: degeneration of articular cartilage, hypertrophy of subchondral bone and joint capsule of WB joints
Medications: NSAIDS, corticosteroids for inflammation
Interventions: joint protection, joint mechanics, endurance with aquatics
Rheumatoid: Ankylosing Spondylitis
Progressive inflammation that starts in the axial skeleton - unknown etiology
Characterized by: back pain initially, morning stiffness, sacroiliitis - decreased lumbar lordosis and increased kyphosis of cervical and thoracic
Interventions: flexibility for trunk in all directions, endurance with aquatic, relaxation to maintain respiratory function
Rheumatoid: Gout
Genetic - elevated serum uric acid, deposits into peripheral joints and organs
Characterized by: most frequently seen in the knee and great toe
Medications: NSAIDs, COX-2 inhibitors…
Interventions: injury prevention and reduction, early ID of condition with medical treatment
Rheumatoid: Psoriatic arthritis
Chronic, erosive inflammation, associated with psoriasis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Chronic, systemic disorder involving synovial tissues and articular cartilage
Characterized by: ulnar drift of PIP joints, swan neck of boutonniere deformities, nodes on dorsal PIP
