Q

Explain the issue of stratification that arises from data scraping?

A

People are stratified (split) by friendship data and past history
-Ppl without less wealthy friends and history, sold debt
-“Sold debt” targeted by loan companies and poor quality educations
-So like loans with super high pay back rate (if poor enough u do it to feed ur family)
-Also subprime items
-They profile u based on browsing history (algorithms) (fully machine ran)
-Everything is being done through data signals

Q

Why is this stratification / profiling a bad thing?

A
  1. If targeted on basis of your vulnerability, it’s not good (shouldn’t encourage targeting on exploit ppl based on their profile)
  2. Many social media sites are competing (who can build best profiles, sell best adverts)
Ex. If buying and selling things through Facebook, they’ll have all your finance data

Q

How does Facebook manipulate attention?

A

Facebook manipulated attention to look at adverts

Adverts at top of the news feed

Ex. If friend that doesn’t get much clicks it’ll be hard to find them in the algorithm

Q

What can be done about this?

A

Regulation, they need to be held to account

They’re so powerful, it’s hard to hold them accountable (need government to step in)

Now these platforms are so intertwined in our lives

fear of missing out if not on them (FOMO)
