Q

How do street oriented adults promote the street to children?

A

Street oriented adults who these children contact (at home and in the street) help shape and reinforce these messages.
Ex. “watch your back” “respect yourself” “if someone disses you, you got to straighten them out”

If a child comes home upset from being beat up - told to go back out and beat the other kid. (reinforcement for being tough /showing nerve)

Q

Explain the Dilemma of the Decent Kid:

A

Child (5-8) of a decent inner city family will travel to the street

Code switch at home vs the street

Even decent young people must make their peace with bigger groups like Tyree’s

Children must play this role well (relates to who his mentors and homies are)

How ‘good’ he is correlates with with how ‘bad’ the neighbourhood is viewed

-Lee’s story: Getting lumped in with the street oriented people takes a mental toll on them

Have to dress like street goers to not get in trouble, but then get stopped by cops
