Crenshaw Flashcards
Who are well known police shooting victim?
Men
What happens when new facts don’t agree with the publics mental frame?
they have trouble accepting them into their way of thinking about a problem
What is Trickle down approach to social justice, and why does Crenshaw argue against it?
Crenshaw argues against a “trickle-down” approach to social justice that assumes that by virtue of attention to issues affecting African Americans and issues affecting women, Black women’s needs will be addressed
What is Intersectionality?
inequalities overlap creating multiple levels of social injustice
How did Crenshaw come up with the term intersectionality:
A woman tried to get a job at a mechanic firm
Hired black men
Hired white women (as secretaries)
She sued: judge dismissed her cuz of this
Did not account for the intersection of race and gender
How is intersectionality like a intersection?
Two routes like dual discrimination
And traffic is the hiring policies and other practices that run through the routes
Simultaneous impact of sexism and racism
Law= will only help if she’s harmed on racism route or sexism route, NOT in the intersection
Lvl of violence black women encounter from police is staggering
What can we do?
- Demand we say her names (their names)
- Bear witness to painful realities we would rather not confront (how brutally black women are being treated)
