Situational variables affecting obedience Flashcards
What are the 3 situational variables
Proximity, location and uniform
What was Bickman (1974)
Carried out a field experiment in New York, asking passers by to pick up litter or lend money to a stranger
What did bickman find
92% obedience to a man dressed in guards uniform and 49% to those dressed casually
How did milgram test proximity
He put the teacher and learner in the same room as each other
How did proximity effect conformity
It decreased to 40%
Why did obedience levels fall in proximity
The teacher could see the learners pain
How did he test proximity with the researcher
The researcher left the room and gave instructions from afar (dropped to 21%)
How did milgram test location
He moved his experiment to a run down building in Connecticut
Why did location decrease conformity
It was no longer associated with Yale
How did location decrease obedience
