What is social psychology
A branch of psychology which examines how people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours affect other people
What does social influence specifically look at
The extent of which our own behaviour is shaped by those around us
What is compliance
Publicly conforming to behaviour of others in a group but privately maintaining one’s own views
Why is compliance temporary
Once the majority is no longer present, our behaviour reverts back to what matches our beliefs
What is identification
Adopting views/behaviour of a group publicly and privately because you value group membership
Why is identification temporary
It relies on group membership
What is internalisation
A conversion or true change of private beliefs to match the group
Why is internalisation distinguished from identification
Because the new attitudes and behaviours become part of your value system
Why is internalisation permanent
It doesn’t rely on group presence
Why does NSI occur
Out of a desire to be liked or respected
When does NSI occur
When the group is important
Why does ISI occur
Out of a desire to be right or avoid embarrassment
When is ISI likely to occur
In ambiguous situations or emergencies
