AA- advancements in technology

A

Kelly wanted to enhance the way dance looked in movies and used technology to do so. this helped to increase audience members and impact dance in film. therefore, jazz and dance in general would be more popular with a wider audience.
in ‘Anchor’s Aweigh’, Kelly dances with Jerry mouse: perform a side slide, taking their arms out into a diagonal arm line. jerry also performs tap steps with Maxie fords and shuffle ball changes.
Jerry was a popular character with audiences amongst many age groups which made it more enjoyable for audiences.

aural setting: AIP

A

Gershwins Paris- 20 minuted musical piece called An American in Paris (1928). he stated that “ My purpose here is to portray the impression of an American visitor in Paris as he strolls about the city and listens to various street noises and absorbs French atmosphere”.
Music builds at the ed of Dream Ballet to a crescendo.
Gershwin’s music changes in sequence 3 of Dream Ballet to a jazz-inspired melody which is a continuation of sequence 2.

AIP- Dream Ballet

A

similar to Broadway Melody from SITR as it is a full length ballet.
follows “An American in Paris” chasing after his French dream girl that appears and disappears through the Paris of his favourite artists as their paintings come to life.
Use of duet and pas de deux, section with use of barber shop quartet- tap sequence.

Kelly’s style

A

Low and earth bound with pulsating body movements and emphasised isolation, strong rhythmic patters; typical of jazz dance.
In “American In Paris”, Kelly is surrounded by children as he moves through them sideways in a tap sequence. as he reaches one end, he performs a foot stamp, taking his arms out in a jazz low V, as he pauses for a moment, continuing hi song.

AIP- plot and theme

A

American soldier (Jerry) decides to stay in Paris and continue his love for painting.
Universal love story- intrigued by a mysterious girl, a place of darkness can lead to love and romance (after war).
Impact of war- set after WWII; conveys muted atmosphere of a city following Nazi occupation. Characters are physically and emotionally wounded.
Healing power of the arts- Paris was the centre of the arts. Characters use the arts as a coping mechanism and medium of expression.
Language of Dance- tells story through ballet, jazz and musical vocab. engages audiences imagination.
