Little Red Rooster Flashcards
Rooster Strut
Travelling from stage right towards stage left, the male dancer extends his right leg in front of him with his toes sliding along the floor and his head and neck jutting forward, suggestive of chicken, and his arms are bent at a 90 degree angle at his waist with his hands relaxed, pointing towards the floor with his body tilted slightly forward. He performs four walks, his head jutting forward at each step, and on the fourth walk with his left leg in front, he pauses and rolls his shoulders back so that his left leg is extended in front of him and his body has been pulled to the outstretched extremities. Once rolling his shoulders back, he continues the rooster strut to perform 5 more walks and join the remainder of the male dancers.
-Anthropomorphic qualities-interpretations; represent animal mating rituals and dominance.
Grooming gestures
The male dancer steps on his left leg, facing stage right with his left foot bevelled. He brings his left hand up through the left side of his head as he turns his head and torso towards the audience before stepping onto his right leg to turn his whole body towards the audience and turning his head towards stage right. As he turns his head, he clutches onto his tie with the right hand at the top of the tie and the left hand halfway down and pushes it twice up his shirt whilst jutting his head forward.
Movement example 1, little red rooster
the male dancer is facing the audience, downstage centre as he turns his legs in towards each other with his elbows bent, rested at his hips and his forearms out to the side. he then performs two knee chokes in which both of his knees knock into each other in an inverted alignment before he transfers his weight onto his right leg to continue the next phrase of movement.
movement example 2, little red rooster
the male dancer steps on his left leg, facing stage right before turning his torso to face the audience. as he does this, his left leg is bent, on a bevelled foot and his left hand lifts to the left side of his head, running his hand through his hair. he then drops his arm and turns his whole body to the front to perform the next movement.
movement example , little red rooster
the male dancer turns from facing stage right, to facing the front as his right hand comes to the top of his tie and his left hand is placed further down the tie. his head is turned towards stage right as he juts it forward twice, while adjusting the knot of the tie at the same time.
movement example , little red rooster
the male dancer is downstage right facing stage left as he steps forward onto his right leg. as he does this, his torso is pitched forward and his arms are strongly held by his sides whilst he steps onto his right leg in a plié, and drags his left leg, fully stretched, behind him. he performs this movement on his left leg and as he does so, his head juts forward.
movement example 5, little red rooster
the male dancer is downstage centre, facing the audience with his hands clutching his shoulder, his left foot bevelled and his right leg straight. with his hands still on his shoulders, he circles them twice before releasing them up to his head as his back is arched, his head leant back whilst his hands come to his mouth with it wide open. as he lifts his arms, his right leg comes off the floor in an attitude position behind his back.
movement example 6, little red rooster
the male dancer is travelling towards stage right as he jumps, stepping on to his right leg with his hands clutching onto the lapels of his jacket. as he jumps, his right leg is bent in front, with his left leg in attitude behind him, his hands still on his jacket. this is referred to as the rooster jump.
