Q

What is done when the grafted vines are planted? How long does it take for it to produce the first yield?

A

Vines are surrounded with plastic sleeves to protect against herbicide and grow a good root system. 3 years.

Q

Why canopy management?

A
  • The vines would produce grapes ripe enough for the bird not for winemaking.
  • The vine might focus on the growing plant than fruits,
  • Control vine vigour and encourage fruit ripening.

Q

What are the differences between an open canopy and close canopy?

A

Open canopy: Most leaves and fruit exposed to the sun and is warmed in the day and cooled in the night. Leaves and fruit are exposed to ambient humidity and the wind speed similar to ambient.
Close canopy: Many leaves and fruit in shade, resulting in the interior temp are closer to the ambient temp day and night. WInd speed is reduced in the canopy so the humidity is well above ambient.

15
Q

What is cane pruning?

A

It is the commonly used method in New Zealand. It is suitable for vines of low vigour and cool-climate region. This takes greater skill as it required manually cutting and correctly selecting cane (1 or 2).

16
Q

What is spur pruning?

A

It is suitable for vines of medium-high vigour and warm climate region. This can be mechanically pruned. It is a more traditional training method.

17
Q

What are the three types of trellis system?

A

Bush-trained, Vertical shoot positioning (VSP) and big vine.

18
Q

What are the characteristics of bush trained?

A
  • Spur-pruned and hand-picked.
  • an ancient method for low vigour vines
  • hot and sunny regions.
  • It has very little airflow and shading for cool regions.
19
Q

What are the characteristics of vertical shoot positioning (VSP)?

A
  • Commonly used system.
  • It is suitable for replacement cane or spur pruning.
  • mechanised and low vigour vines
  • low trained (obtain heat) high trained (avoid frost)
  • separation of shoots increases airflow and exposure to sunlight, great for high-density planting.
20
Q

Types of big vine.

A
  • Geneva double curtain
  • Lyre
  • Scott Henry
  • Smart Dyson
21
Q

What is the treatment for pest?

A

Birds- falcon
Phylloxera- phylloxera-resistance rootstock
Nematodes- Sanitise soil before planting
Insects - spray and sticky trap

22
Q

What is the treatment for the disease?

A

Powdery Mildew- sulphur based spray

Downy Mildew- Copper based spray
