Site Prep Flashcards
What is winter drying?
Rapid removal of snow cover, exposing seedlings to cold dry winter air. Foliage dries out, stressing and sometimes killing.
Where do you plant when trenching?
On berm in wet site (aeration and nutrition)
In trench on dry site ( access to moisture )
Plant on hinge when brush is an issue. Follow with brush treatment
3 components to trench system
Prime mover (tractor, skidder etc)
Component (disk trencher attachment)
Operator (human controller).
How does trench direction affect plantation
NS direction gives the most even light and warmth
Trenches that originate at road make for easier planting
Cattle can follow trenches and trample seedlings if they are aligned all the same direction
How can disk trench cost be recovered?
Minimized planting cost due to reduced need to search for Plantable Spots
Why is disk trenching so effective
Concentrates soil nutrients on the berm where increased heat and light combine with nutrition to create an ideal growing medium for some species.
Mounding is a helpful site prep method because…
- Trees are higher and get more light
- More heat to soil gives more root development
- Aeration by keeping roots above water table
- Reduce mammal damage
- Reduces non crop comp.
- Increase OM decomposition
- Easier for planting
Primo benefit to site prep
- higher survival
- higher return on investment
- reduced rotation
Disks trench vs Mound
Disk trench on drier sites
Mound on wetter sites
