Assess nearby openings and clearcuts for clues.
What is a cold air drainage?
A natural phenomenon where cold air flows down mountainsides at night, causing nightly frost pockets that could damage newly planted seedlings.
When do roots and stem grow in the year
In the spring and late summer, roots grow and in the summer the stem grows.
What critters can cause seedling damage?
Rodents girdle, squirrels hit buds in heavy snow areas, deer and elk cause heavy damage.
What is sometimes necessary to assist the planting process?
Site prep such as slash removal, proper road access, camp setup, air transportation, transportation of seedlings.
What gives information on the morphology of seedlings?
Stock types. There are many types, but the bigger the more expensive.
Why do sites planned for artificial regen need to be assessed?
For the purpose of identifying the types of seedling and stock type that will work best.
Considers many issues such as ECOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION, soil type, moisture, forest type, forest health, site series, browse potential, brush competition, cold air drainage, access etc.
Why is duff a bad planting medium?
After harvest, duff decomposes due to increased heat energy.
What are some methods of seedling protection?
Vexar Net tubes (least expensive) - can cause snow press, cause damage when removing.
Grow tubes (plastic material). Easy installation. Act as a greenhouse, increasing growth potential, but can also give brush an advantage inside the tube.
Sinocast tubes (4 sided pyramid style with open tops. Bottoms must be flat against the ground.)g
As a forester, do you ever communicate directly with planters?
No, the planting contractor only to avoid misinterpretations

What do bids usually require?
A security deposit in case of default
What is a pre work conference?
A mandatory meeting between contractor and forester after bid is accepted to discuss the specifics of the contract and any issues of concern.
Who is responsible for ordering and making arrangements for seedlings, the contractor or the forrester?
Forrester. Must communicate with contractor often to ensure steady flow of seedlings to accomodate needs. Find out how many planted per day, assess need for supply.
