Single Transferable Vote/STV (proportional Representation System) Flashcards
What do you do in a ballot box
You number the candidate in order of preference
How many representatives do you get if this was used in a general election
You get multiple representatives (in uk would be about 6 per constituency)
How does this system convert votes into seats / how are representatives chosen
For each constituency the candidate must reach a quota this is the number of votes in a constituency divided by the number of candidates in the constituency plus one. Every candidate who reaches the quota is elected
How does each candidate achieve the quota
If you get the required amount of votes (reach the quota) in the first round you become an mp then however many voted that are above the quota for that candidate the second preference of theses voters is distributed to the other candidate. After this is done if any other candidate reaches the quota they also become an mp and the above process is repeated. If through this process no candidate reaches the quota and their are seats outstanding then the candidate with the least votes is eliminated and their second preferences are redistributed to the other candidates. This process continues until all seats until all seats are filled
