Simple molecular substances (Covalent compounds) Flashcards
What is a simple molecular substance?
A simple molecular substance is a few atoms held together with covalent bonds.
Name the 7 main simple molecules
Hydrogen
Chlorine
Hydrogen chloride
Nitrogen
Ammonia
Methane
Water
2 properties of simple covalent molecules
Melting and boiling point
Electrical conductivity
Melting and boiling points
Simple molecular substances have low Melting and boiling points.
This is because although the covalent bond between the atoms is strong, the intermolecular forces of attraction between the molecules are very weak, so less energy is needed to overcome the bonds.
Electrical conductivity
They cannot conduct electricity because there are no free electrons or ions to move around and carry a charge.
