Metallic bonding Flashcards
How are metals structured?
Metals are giant structures , arranged in a regular patter.
They have a lot of atoms
What is a metallic bond?
The reaction between two or more metals
Explain how metallic bonding works?
In metals, the electrons on the outer shell are delocalized, meaning it is free to move around the structure.
The positively charged metal ions and the sea of
delocalized negative electrons attract with very strong electrostatic forces of attraction which hold the bonds together.
This is what you call metallic bonding!
Melting and boiling point
The boiling and melting point of metals are very high because of the very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the metal ions and electrons. A lot of energy is then needed to overcome the strong bond
What are metals at room temperature?
Solid
Conductivity
Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity because of their delocalised electrons that can carry charge and thermal energy.
Malleability
They are malleable(can be bent, hammered, shaped, or rolled).
This is because metal atoms are in a regular arrangement so the atoms can slide over each other.
What is an Alloy?
When two or more metals are mixed together
How are alloys made?
Alloys are made because every element is a different size so when they are mixed with pure metal, This will distort the layers in the metals’ regular arrangement It becomes more difficult for atoms to side over each other.
