Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is an ionic bond?
A
When a metal reacts with a non-metal.
It is the transfer of electrons
2
Q
The process in which an ionic bond is made.
A
- The metal loses its electrons to become a positive ion and obtain a full shell.
- These electrons get transferred to the non-metal where it gains the electron and becomes a negative ion with a stable outer shell.
- These oppositely charged ions attract with strong electrostatic forces of attraction, holding them together with tight bonds.
This makes them an ionic compound with an ionic bond
3
Q
What type of forces of attraction does the ion have towards each other
A
Electrostatic
