Ionic compounds Flashcards
Structure of an ionic compound
Ionic compounds are structured in giant ionic lattices -closely packed together in a regular arrangement
Advantages of Dot and cross diagram
Helps show how the compound is formed
helps shows the transfer of electrons
Disadvantages of Dot and cross diagram
It doesn’t show the structure, arrangement or relative size of the ions
Advantages of 3D models
They show the relative size of the ions and shows the regular pattern of the lattice
Disadvantages of 3D models
Only lets you see the outer layer
Advantages of Ball and stick models
Shows the regular pattern, sizes of ions, and their arrangement.
Disadvantage of ball and stick models
Suggests that there are gaps when in reality there aren’t any
What are the three properties of Ionic compounds?
High melting and boiling points
High solubility (easily dissolvable)
Good electrical conductor
High Melting and boiling point
Bonds are held with strong electrostatic forces of attraction.
This means you will need more energy to overcome the bonds
Solubility
Able to dissolve easily
Electrical conductivity
It cannot carry a charge when solid.
If melted or dissolved can carry a charge as the ions are free to move.
