Simple Molecular Substance Flashcards
1
Q
What are simple molecules substances
A
A few atoms joined together by covalent bonds
2
Q
Examples of simple molecular substances
A
Hydrogen as they just have one electron meaning they only need one to complete their first shell
Oxygen because they only need two electrons to complete their outer shell
3
Q
Properties of simple molecular substances
A
- Very strong covalent bonds but the forces of attraction between these bonds are weak
- to melt o’boyle a simple molecule compound you need to break the intermolecular bonds and not the convenient bond
- low boiling and melting points
- the bigger of the molecules are the stronger the intermolecular forces so the more energy needed to break them and the higher the melting and boiling point is
- can’t conduct electricity as there are no charged particles free to move around
