Changing State Flashcards
How do you substances change from one state to another
Melting
1) when a particle is heated it gains more energy and this makes the particles vibrate more and this also weakens the forces that hold the solid together.
2) At the melting point the particles have enough energy to break free and it turns from solid to a liquid
3) this makes the particles move faster and this weekend the the bonds holding the liquid together.
4) at at the boiling point the particles have enough energy to break their bonds and the liquid turns into a gas
How do you substances change from one state to another
Freezing
1) at the melting points lots of ones have been formed between the particles and their held in place the liquid then becomes a solid
2) there isn’t enough energy to break the bonds so more bonds formed between them and the liquid cause and the particles have less energy so they move less
3) at the boiling point so many bonds have formed between the gas particles so the gas becomes a liquid
4) when the gas cools the particles no longer have enough energy to overcome the forces of attraction
