simple inheritance. Flashcards
difference between dominant & recessive traits, understand genotype and phenotypes.
what is an allele?
a different version of a gene.
controls how a trait is expressed.
what are some genetic traits?
eye colour, hair colour, dimples, ears, nose, skin tone and height, etc.
what is a dominant allele?
characterised by a upper case letter, if one dominant allele is present the trait is expressed, masking the recessive allele.
what is a recessive allele?
characterised by a lowercase letter, two recessive alleles must be present in order to have that trait expressed. if one dominant allele is present the recessive trait is masked.
what is phenotype?
the physical features of a trait that you can see in an organism.
(eye colour, hair, dimples, etc.)
what is a genotype?
pair of alleles/genetic combination that influence the appearance of a particular trait.
what is heterozygous?
two different alleles.
(Rr)
what is homozygous?
two identical alleles.
(RR, rr)
