De Montfort called the first parliament of commoners when he felt as though his support was shrinking. However he did this without consultation and angered his fellow barons
Death of de Montfort
Barons felt he was acting too much like a king a switched support to King Henry III who defeated him at the Battle of Evesham where he was hacked to death on the battlefield
Significance
Commoners to be consulted on national matters in the future
Parliament to approve taxes in future
Became a symbol and martyr of democracy and freedom
