Puritans dominated parliament and disliked catholic changes to church made by the archbishop

Charles ruled without consulting the parliament for taxes, angering parliament

Charles believed in the divine right of kings and as such ignored parliament, instead preferring his favourite ministers
Start of war
Charles recalled parliament to approve taxes to fund the war in Scotland but Parliament demanded control of the army and drew up the Grand Remonstrance of complaints and demands. Charles attempted to arrest the leading MPs who had already fled, sparking war
Civil War
The royalists started strong but under Oliver Cromwell the New Model Army was formed which was better trained and equipped than the royalists. Parliament won the war
Trial and execution of Charles 1
MPs were divided over how to treat the king so the army ejected 300 MPs and placed the king on trial. he was found guilty of treason and executed.
Short term significance
England became a republic as no new king was instated and was primarily ran by Cromwell
Long term significance
Parliament restored the monarchy following Cromwells death but the king had far less power and parliament was not as influenced by each king
