Simon Flashcards
“What I mean is…maybe it’s only us.”
Simon suggests perhaps the beast is only the boys themselves. Although the other boys laugh off Simon’s words, they are central to Golding’s point that innate human evil exists. Simon is the first character see the beast not as an external force but as part of human nature.
“Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for the fruit they couldn’t reach… passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands.”
This gives Simon almost christ-like qualities to the littleuns’ it relates to the bible when Jesus feeds the 5,000 starving people.
“I just think you’ll get back alright.”
This foreshadows Simon’s death because it’s almost as if Simon knows he’s going to die because he’s already gone completely insane.
“He walked with an accustomed tread through the fruit trees.”
He is at one with nature and he has no fear.
