Silicosis and Berylliosis Flashcards
what is silicosis
fibrosis of lungs caused by inhalation of silica
what occupations are associated with silicosis
mining, foundry workers, glass workers, boiler work, pottery/ceramic work
how long do you need to be exposed to silica to develop silicosis
15-20 years
what are the clinical features of simple pneumoconiosis in silicosis
progressive dyspnoea
what are the clinical features of chronic silicosis
pulmonary fibrosis and increased risk of TB
what spirometry pattern is seen with silicosis and berylliosis
restrictive
describe the typical CXR of silicosis
egg shell calcification of hilar lymph nodes
describe the management of silicosis and berylliosis
smoking cessation, removal of silica/beryllium exposure and treatment of any co-existing respiratory conditions
what causes berylliosis
inhalation of beryllium(exposure length to cause disease is unknown)
what are the clinical features of berylliosis
progressive dyspnoea and pulmonary fibrosis
what is seen on a CXR for berylliosis
early disease = normal CXR
later stages = linear + round opacities
what other investigation other than CXR and spirometry can be done for berylliosis
beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test(BeLPT)
