silicosis Flashcards
silica
SiO2, its quartz. found in sed meta and ig rocks
silicosis
a form of pulmonary fibrosis (fatal disease) and is similar to asbestosis.
the lungs are scared causing them to become inflamed and stiffen reducing the oxygen supply to the blood
those who contract this commonly don’t live for more than 3-5 years
2 building materials with silica
concrete and brick
how does the body respond to inhaling silica
macrophages (immune system cells) attack (engulf) the silica and embed it into the lung tissue to prevent it from spreading around
3 occupations where workers are at risk of developing silica inhalation
construction
mining
anything to do with cutting: sand blasting, glass cutting, stone sitting, steel cutting
symptoms of silicosis
Acute (may arise suddenly): fever, chest pain and breathing difficulty
chronic (slow development): shitty chest x-ray
coughing and difficulty breathing
phlegm
bronchitis
wheezing
excessive scaring
how can silica inhalation be reduced
preventing silica dust from becoming air born:
-water can be used to suppress dust in air
-vacumes can be installed to capture the air
-respirators a work, but it doesn’t protect the people around you
can silicosis be reversed?
no, its like mesothelioma and asbestosis. it will progressively get worse.
