SI: Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
Locus of control (Rotter)
Refers to a person’s perception of personal control over their own behaviour
Personality explanation
Internal locus of control
Believe their life is determined by own decisions and efforts
External locus of control
Believes their life is determined by fate, luck, and external factors
High internals and social influence
High internals - actively seek out info for themselves, less likely to rely on others
Achievement oriented
Better at resisting pressure
High externals and social influence
High externals are more likely to be influenced by others as they don’t believe that they exercise personal control over their lives
Supporting evidence for LOC
Holland 1967
Repeated Milgram’s study
37% of intervals didn’t continue to highest shock levels (showed greater resistance to authority)
23% of externals
Limitation of LOC
Not necessarily most important factor
Only affects behaviours in new situations, not if you have conformed or obeyed in the past
