Q

What is shoulder adbuction and what muscles does it activate?

A

Hand straight and lengthening your arm away from your body. It works your delts. The first 0-15 degrees of abduction is produced by the supraspinatus. The middle fibres of the deltoid are responsible for the next 15-90 degrees. Past 90 degrees, the scapula needs to be rotated to achieve abduction – that is carried out by the trapezius and serratus anterior.

Q

Why is it important to exercise your shoulder muscles

A

Our shoulders are complex and need a balance of strength and flexibility to work properly. Many Pilates exercises target the deep stabilising muscles of the shoulder girdle, such as the rotator cuff muscles. Strengthening these muscles helps support the shoulder joint and reduce the risk of injury
