Shoulder Region Flashcards
Upper Trapezius
Origin: External occipital protuberance, superior nuchal line, ligamentum nuchae
Insertion: Posterior border of lateral 1/3 clavicle
Action: Scapular elevation, retraction, upward rotation
Innervation: Accessory Nerve (CN XI)
Middle Trapezius
Origin: Ligamentum nuchae, C7-T3 spinous processes
Insertion: Medial edge of acromion process, superior edge of spine of scapula
Action: Scapular retraction, (upward rotation as a stabiliser)
Innervation: Accessory Nerve (CNXI)
Lower Trapezius
Origin: T4-T12 Spinous processes
Insertion: Tubercle of spine of scapula via aponeurosis
Action: Scapular depression, retraction, upward rotation
Innervation: Accessory Nerve (CNXI)
Levator Scapulae
Origin: C1-C5 Transverse processes
Insertion: Medial border of scapula above root of spine of scapula
Action: Scapular elevation, retraction (not as much as rhomboids), downward rotation
Innervation: C3,4 Ventral rami & Dorsal Scapular Nerve (C5 ventral rami)
Rhomboid Minor
Origin: C7-T1 Spinous processes, ligamentum nuchae
Insertion: Posterior aspect of medial border @ root of spine of scapula
Action: Scapular elevation, retraction, downward rotation
Innervation: Dorsal Scapular Nerve (C5 Ventral Rami)
Rhomboid Major
Origin: T2-5 Spinous processes
Insertion: Posterior aspect of medial border of scapula from root of spine of scapula to inferior angle
Action: Scapular elevation, retraction, downward rotation
Innervation: Dorsal Scapular Nerve (C5 Ventral Rami)
Serratus Anterior
Origin: Anterolateral ribs 1-9
Insertion: Costal surface, medial border of scapula
Action: Scapular protraction, upward rotation, stabilise medial border of scapula against thoracic wall
Innervation: Long Thoracic Nerve (C5, 6 & 7 Ventral Rami)
Pectoralis Minor
Origin: Coracoid process
Insertion: Anterior ribs 3-5
Action: Anterior tilt, scapular protraction (- pulls coracoid process down anteriorly; secures/anchors coracoid process so muscles of the back can downwardly protract scapula)
Innervation: Medial Pectoral Nerve
Subclavius
Origin: Medial 1st rib
Insertion: Subclavian groove of clavicle
Action:
Contraction could provide stability of clavicle and SCJ (accessory muscle for stability) & Resist excessive elevation and lateral translation of clavicle (contraction provides an inferomedial pull and compression to the joint)
Innervation: Subclavian Nerve
Anterior Deltoid
Origin: Anterior border of lateral 1/3 clavicle
Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity
Action: GHJ flexion, abduction, horizontal flexion, medial rotation
Innervation: Axillary Nerve (C5 & C6)
Middle Deltoid
Origin: Lateral edge of acromion process of scapula
Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity
Action: GHJ abduction
Innervation: Axillary Nerve (C5 & C6)
Posterior Deltoid
Origin: Inferior edge of spine of scapula
Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity
Action: GHJ extension, adduction, horizontal extension, lateral rotation
Innervation: Axillary Nerve (C5 & C6)
Supraspinatus
Origin: Supraspinous Fossa of scapula
Insertion: Greater tubercle of humerus
Action: GHJ abduction, compression
Innervation: Suprascapular nerve (C5, C6)
Infraspinatus
Origin: Infraspinous Fossa of scapula
Insertion: Greater tubercle of humerus
Action: GHJ lateral rotation, abduction (superior portion), compression
Innervation: Suprascapular nerve (C5, C6)
Teres Minor
Origin: Upper 2/3 of lateral border of scapula
Insertion: Greater tubercle of humerus
Action: Assist GHJ lateral rotation, compression
Innervation: Axillary Nerve (C5, C6)
