shoulder instability Flashcards
defintion
instability of the shoulder involves painful and abnormal translational movement or subluxation and/or recurrent dislocation
2 subtypes of shoulder instability
- traumatic
2. atraumatic
traumatic instability
patients may experience a traumatic anterior dislocation which after reduction may settle and the shoulder stabilises with physic but some shoulders do not stabilise and develop recurrent dislocations or subluxation on minimal force
why is age important in shoulder dislocations
it predicts the likelihood of further dislocations
chance of further dislocation in first time dislocation in someone under 20
80%
chance of further dislocation in first time dislocation in someone over 30
20%
procedure for recurrent shoulder dislocations
bankart repair
atraumatic instability
patients with generalised laxity (ehler-danlos, marfans) can have pain from recurrent multi-directional (anterior, posterior or inferior) subluxations or dislocations
