What to do during 1st time shoulder dislocation management?

A

Conservative vs surgical management.

Majority are ANT dislocations. Attempt to relocate arm, if successful take x-ray to reveal any other damages. If unsuccessful, require surgery to reinforce both articulating surfaces.

When to go for the surgical option in shoulder dislocations?

A

If chance/risk of re-dislocation is high e.g. contact sports.

All depends on what the athlete is doing!

Ultimate goal of treatment = enforcing the “forgotten injury” where athlete does not remember injurying it.

A

immobilisation using arm sling to prevent further damage during movement.

A

Assesses whether the achilles tendon is intact.

Squeeze calf muscle for foot to plantarflex reflex

When to use surgery or conservative method in achilles tendon ruptures?

A

conservative if rupture gap = <0.5cm
surgery recommended for >0.5cm based on research stating re-rupture and tendon strength deterioriates if conservative management is utilised.
